Can you tell us a bit more about the recording of this? I was expecting it to be all electronic and bleepy - but listened to "Donna's Mystery" and that was guitary and ambient. Where'd the drum track come from on that - it sounds live.
The whole album was done on fruity loops - The drums on Donna's Mystery are some loops I downloaded off the net - all the guitar stuff is me.
I recorded the guitar stuff in a kinda round about way (i.e. not really knowing what I was doing) by listening to the background track quietly in the background and playing over it into Cool Edit and then cutting and splicing the results together.
The vibe of this particular CD is more introspective, kinda ambient and thoughtful. I had to omit quite a few tracks 'cos they were just too jarring with the overall effect. It's been a long time since i've made some music so there were some emotional things that were bound to come out. I think the next project (whenever that may be) will definately be more extroverted and outgoing!
Interestingly though I have now got about roughly an hour of more quirky, darker and beat driven stuff that I now realise works great as a seperate album, which will follow shortly!
Can you release your dark stuff as a separate album too? I'm just going to give secret journey a listen an post some thing up later. Thanks for this Matt, and sorry for being pushy earlier!!!
On first listen, the general feel is like that of a concept album. Even though there's a variety on styles on there, it all blends together beautifully.
I love the drums in the signiature track 'Secret Journey' and the Orbital-like timbres. Parts of the album manage to sound like the end-of-level boss segments in games like R-type and Shinobi - this doesn't dilute it's feel and emotion though.
The dialogue samples across the piece are well chosen and amusing and seem made for the music. And knowing Matt, some tones take me straight back to Laurel Bank and the Gembala bedsit with Quartet-like transposes that are apparent in the capabilities of Fruity-Loops also.
I'm going to be listening to this for a long time to come - I consider myself (unashamedly) your biggest fan. Can't wait to hear the other stuff.
Thanks for the comments Jase - much appreciated, it's always good to know that someone likes what you do! ;-) I'm a pretty big fan of your stuff also!
I like what you say about the 'concept album' thing - one of the reasons it took so long to release this stuff is trying to get the thing working as a whole and learning to drop tracks that don't fit even if you really like them. The flow of an album is definately an important point for me and I remember being mortified when Kipz released some quartet stuff but edited out the silly inbetween song bits that I felt were just as important as the tracks themselves!
Anyway, I feel relieved that 'Secret Journey' is now done and dusted and I can relax a bit with the tracks on the next one and just mix it up a bit.
Also coming soon - A hip hop band from Slaithwaite with Ebony on backing vocals - watch this space!
